Farewell to Consumer-Grade Involution: Micron Spins Off Crucial Business to Fully Sprint for the Core AI Storage Market

Micron Technology announced on December 3, 2025, that it will fully exit the consumer business of its subsidiary brand Crucial.

Per Micron’s official statement, the company will continue selling Crucial’s DRAM and SSD products through existing consumer channels until the end of its fiscal year 2026 Q2 (i.e., late February 2026). Starting from March 2026, consumers will no longer be able to purchase new Crucial products via retailers or e-commerce platforms. Micron emphasized that it will continue to honor warranty obligations and provide technical support for all sold Crucial products during and after the transition period.

Micron described the exit as a "difficult decision," citing the explosive surge in memory and storage demand driven by AI-powered data center growth as the core reason. The company needs to reallocate production capacity and resources to prioritize large strategic clients in the faster-growing, higher-margin enterprise and AI sectors.

Regarding employees affected by the business restructuring, Micron stated that it plans to mitigate the impact through internal role reassignment. While the Crucial consumer brand will be phased out, Micron will continue to sell enterprise-grade storage products under its flagship "Micron" brand through commercial channels.

Micron’s exit is expected to have a significant impact on the consumer storage market. Industry analysts note that the number of major global consumer DRAM manufacturers will decrease from three (Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron) to two. This may strengthen the pricing power of remaining suppliers and could exacerbate supply constraints for consumer DRAM and SSDs.
